10/12/10

Hello Fellow Beekeepers

The WNC Center for Honeybee Research would like your help in getting the word out to all your members:

There’s an all day bee extravaganza to be held on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville North Carolina on Saturday November 13, 2010 and we’d like any interested beekeepers who can make the trip to attend. Asheville was recently picked as the #1 spot for Fall color and we expect mild temperatures and leaves still on the trees for some great mountain viewing.

We’ve got a line-up of some of the most energetic and cutting-edge experts: Marla Spivak, Jay Evans, Debbie Delaney, and Jamie Ellis!

Marla was recently awarded one of 23 world-wide MacArthur Fellowships. (That’s a REALLY BIG DEAL) Most everyone knows she is the originator of the Minnesota Hygienic mite resistant queens and she will be discussing her research on propolis and answering questions about her travels and projects.

Jay Evans is a prominent Research Scientist at the USDA-ARS national honeybee laboratory in Beltsville MD. He will present his work on the affect genes exert on honeybee behavior and survivability. Some of you may recently have read of his work linking viruses with Nosema in the search for the causes of CCD?

Debbie Delaney recently took Dewey Caron’s place at the University of Delaware. She’s been instrumental in the survey of commercial queen stock genetics on both sides of the Mississippi – working with both Dr. Steve Shepard  at Washington State and Dr. David Tarpy at NCSU. She’s currently completing a survey of feral populations along the eastern seaboard and we hope she will provide insight into her planned research with Tom Seeley and David Tarpy in the Arnot Forest at Cornell.

Jamie Ellis is Assistant Professor at the University of Florida in Gainesville and is head of that state’s extension research. At the cross-roads for many large commercial pollinating operations Florida bears the brunt of the worst stresses our bees face today. Jamie will discuss his myriad research initiatives and his part in the CAPP grant search for the cause of CCD.

Seating is limited. Details and pre-registration at http://www.wncbees.org  If you can’t come, please tell your friends.

May your bees live long and prosper.

Carl Chesick

Acting Director

Western North Carolina Center for Honeybee Research

8/31/10

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Hives of honeybees in the Upper Cumberland are suffering from American Foulbrood, a contagious bacterial disease that can kill the entire hive.

Symptoms include a distinctive odor in the hive, sunken brood comb and the normally white larvae turning brown.

The Cookeville Herald-Citizen said 44 colonies have been affected in Putnam, Overton and Cumberland counties. Typitcall, eight cases are found statewide annually.

In the past, beekeepers have been able to use antibiotics to control the disease. However this recent outbreak seems to be a new strain resistant to the current antibiotics.

American Foulbrood cannot be transferred to humans, but it does kill the bees that are responsible for the reproduction of countless species of plants and increasing the quantity and quality of many agricultural crops.

7/18/10     Permacomb Frame Order - contact Chuck Cook for more info

Fellow Beekeepers,

For those of you that were interested in purchasing the Permacomb (food grade plastic fully drawn frames for a medium super) frames.  John Seets doesn’t put an order together very often so if you are interested this would bee a good time to order since you can order small quantities.

I am sure I have missed some of our beekeeper friends so if you would please share this with your beekeeper mailing list.

Got into the hives today.  Honey galore and very few hive beetles.  Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
